History of the Jeay Sindh Struggle

Voice of Sindhudesh > History of the Jeay Sindh Struggle

📖 The Jeay Sindh Struggle: A Historical Timeline

📚 Foundations of Sindhi Nationalism (Pre-1972)

The Jeay Sindh movement is rooted in the ideology of Sain Ghulam Murtaza Syed (G. M. Syed)—a prominent political thinker and one of the first Sindhi leaders to demand autonomy and national identity for Sindh after Pakistan’s creation in 1947. Disillusioned by the centralized, Islamic, and military-dominated state, G. M. Syed laid the intellectual foundation for Sindhudesh, a secular and independent homeland for Sindhis.

📅 1972 – Formation of Jeay Sindh Students’ Federation (JSSF)

In 1972, Sain G. M. Syed officially launched the Jeay Sindh Students’ Federation (JSSF) as the first organized nationalist body for Sindhi youth. JSSF became the ideological and activist training ground for generations of Sindhi students and played a central role in political mobilization on campuses across Sindh.

🏛️ Formation of the First Two Political Wings

To support the growing student movement and political awakening, two mother political parties were formed:

  • Jeay Sindh Mahaz (JSM)
  • Jeay Sindh Tehreek (JST)

These parties worked alongside JSSF, following G. M. Syed’s non-violent and secular Sindhudesh ideology. They organized peaceful rallies, published literature, and promoted Sindhi identity, language, and history.

🕊️ 1995 – Death of Sain G. M. Syed and Unification

After the passing of Sain G. M. Syed in 1995, a major organizational shift occurred:

  • Jeay Sindh Tehreek (JST) and Jeay Sindh Mahaz (JSM) merged to form a new unified political platform: Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM)

This unification aimed to consolidate the Sindhi nationalist forces under a single banner to continue the peaceful struggle for Sindhudesh.

📌 Summary Timeline

🔎 Legacy and Importance

  • JSSF remains one of the most powerful student-led movements in Sindh’s history.
  • The formation of JSQM symbolized unity after a visionary leader’s passing and continues to be a core force in the Sindhi nationalist political landscape.
  • Today, multiple parties and student organizations trace their ideological roots back to these formative years and the vision of Sain G. M. Syed.
